Curling Sessions
Basic Rules of Curling
Teams
-
Each team consists of four players: the lead, second, third (or vice-skip), and skip.
Stones
-
Each team has 8 stones (also called rocks) per end (round), making a total of 16 stones in play for each end.
-
Stones weigh approximately 44 pounds (20 kg) and are made of granite.
Ends
-
A curling match consists of 8 to 10 ends, similar to innings in baseball. An end is completed when all 16 stones have been thrown.
Objective
-
The goal is to have your team's stones closest to the center of the house (called the "button") after all stones are delivered in an end.
-
Points are awarded based on how many stones are closer to the button than the nearest stone of the opposing team. Only one team can score in each end.
Delivering the Stones
-
Players slide the stone from one end of the ice toward the house at the opposite end. Players use a sliding motion to release the stone with a twist, which makes it "curl" as it travels down the ice.
Sweeping
-
Two players sweep the ice in front of the moving stone to influence its direction and speed. Sweeping reduces friction, allowing the stone to travel farther and straighter.
Turns
-
Each team alternates delivering stones. The skip, positioned at the house, directs the team and determines the strategy.
Scoring
-
After all 16 stones are delivered in an end, points are awarded to the team with the stone(s) closest to the button.
-
Only one team scores in each end, and they score one point for each stone closer to the button than the opponent’s nearest stone.
Hammer
-
The team throwing last in an end has the "hammer," which is an advantage. The hammer alternates between teams if no one scores in an end, or the team that didn’t score gets the hammer in the next end.
Ties and Extra Ends
-
If the game is tied after the set number of ends, extra ends are played to determine the winner.
Curling is as much a game of skill and precision as it is strategy, with teams planning shots and positioning stones to block or knock away opponents' stones.
Curling Sessions
Curling is a precision team sport played on ice where two teams take turns sliding heavy stones toward a target, called the "house". The objective is to accumulate the highest score by getting your stones closer to the centre of the house than your opponent's.
Wear warm comfortable clothing and flat, grippy shoes/trainers. Skates are not required. Equipment is supplied. Rules are available to view at the rink.
One team of 4 players per game. (The curling alley can only take bookings for one team (4) per session).
Curling teams will be required to sign a form at the rink when collecting the equipment to confirm they will return all equipment as it was received, and pay for any damages.
